How to get your business on Google Maps

A free Google Business Profile is how you show up on Maps and in the local results when people search for what you do nearby. Setup takes about 15 minutes, plus Google's verification.

  1. 1

    Start at Google Business Profile

Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with a Google account you'll keep for the business. It's free; nobody can sell you a better spot. google.com/business

  2. 2

    Enter your real business name

Use the name customers see on your sign, truck or invoices. Adding keywords or a city to the name breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.

  3. 3

    Pick your main category

Type your main service and choose Google's closest match. You can add a few secondary categories later.

  4. 4

    Say where you work

If customers come to you, add your address. If you go to them (cleaning, trades, mobile services), add a service area instead and keep your home address hidden. P.O. boxes and virtual offices aren't allowed.

  5. 5

    Add your phone and website

Use a number you answer. No website yet? Claim your free one on OwnerUnlocked and use that link. Find my business

  6. 6

    Verify

Google chooses the method. Often it's a short video showing your sign, tools, vehicle or workspace; some businesses get a call, text or email instead. Until you verify, the profile won't show publicly.

  7. 7

    Finish the profile

Add hours, a short description, services and real photos of your work. Then ask happy customers for a Google review; recent reviews help you show up.
