An EIN is your business's tax ID. Banks, clients and payroll ask for it. The IRS gives it for free. Sites that charge for one are filing the same free form for you.

Check you can apply online
Your business must be in the U.S. and the person applying needs an SSN or ITIN.

Open the IRS online application
It's only open at certain hours on weekdays, so if it's closed, try again in the morning. IRS.gov

Choose your business type
Pick LLC if you registered one, then answer a few questions about members and what you do.

Save your confirmation letter
You get the number right away. Download the PDF letter and keep it; banks often ask for it.
